Light on Snow
Nicky notes near the beginning of Light on Snow that her father actively avoids civilization, yet when they find Baby Doris he quickly breaks out of his self-imposed exile to help save the abandoned infant. Why do you think he chooses to become so involved in this situation?

March remembers that, as a girl, “she believed that all you wanted, you would eventually receive, and that fate was a force that worked with, not against you.” (p.7) What does March learn about fate as an adult? Do you believe that what happens to her is a matter of fate, or of something else? Do you find her a sympathetic character?
My thoughts are that March was so “blindly” in love that she was not realistic about how things really were. She may have been this way because she and Hollis never had closure when they departed as kids. I think she could have been more in control of her fate if she had chosen to. I was both sympathetic and angry with her because she gave up so much for this bitter man….her loving husband, her daughter, and her own freedom and happiness. Once she saw how Hollis was, she should have gotten out. It seems that her husband would have been willing to take her back.
